Two local school administrators were honored at the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry 2017 Annual Awards Luncheon on June 6 in Phoenix.

Angel Canto, assistant superintendent of the Nogales Unified School District, and Baltazar Garcia, director of Mexicayotl Academy, both received a Volunteer of the Year award.

The recognition “was a unanimous decision by our organization for your countless hours dedicated towards education awareness this spring,” said Emily Anne Gullickson, senior program director for A for Arizona, a group that supports school leaders, especially those serving low-income student populations.

“Each of you showed courageous leadership that is greatly contributing to the rapid advance of a higher quality of education for more students,” she told the pair.

Canto and Garcia, who represent A-rated schools, work closely with A for Arizona and their awards came as a result of that work.
