We continue to hear positive comments about last week’s Tubac Teach-In. This was one of the favorites:
All too often my colleagues down at the legislature hear only negatives about the current state of our education system. Attending this retreat and other A for Arizona leadership events this year, I have learned that there is another story that is not as often told. It is a success story that more need to know about. I hope in the next legislative session more of my colleagues will explore what A for Arizona has to offer and to see what’s possible for our students.
–State Representative T.J. Shope
During our time in Tubac, our ‘A’ leaders and facilitators led us to some big ideas. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the most important takeaways. Look for more on these topics in the weeks and months to come.
- PSAT test results can serve as an indicator of future student success in AP coursework, and should be administered to all kids. A for Arizona will release a policy paper next month that considers ways to help low-income scholars gain access to quality AP coursework. Administering PSATs to all middle and high school students is a great first step in that direction.
- As Rep. Shope’s comments above indicate, we need to get better at marketing ‘A’. Meaning, let’s highlight what our excelling schools are doing, and how they’re doing it – especially those that are beating the odds in their areas. Stay tuned for a future A for Arizona blog series, “Arizona’s Change Agents,” which will regularly feature our exceptional school leaders and their accomplishments.
- Collaboration among leaders results in even stronger schools. Bringing school leaders together at forums like the Tubac Teach-In is one of the most important things we do at A for Arizona. Engaging with other talented and driven leaders results in shared ideas, resources, and solutions. Equally as important was the common response we received from leaders on how they have moved past the “charter vs. district” tension and are only focused on learning how to get or stay excellent. Count on us to offer more opportunities for this type of collaboration in the future.
